The name Tripel Bier stems from a use in the Middle Ages. The common beer was called a single, suitable for an ordinary worker or a father. A heavier beer was brewed to satisfy the wishes of the wealthy consumer. Because carriers and pub owners often could not read, the brewer placed (chalk) crosses on the barrels: on a barrel of heavier beer, two crosses (double) and on the barrel of the heaviest beer three crosses (tripel). It refers to the amount of malt added. The more malt used, the heavier the beer. This does not mean that twice as many resources are used in a double, but more than in a single one. Nowadays we mean double brown beers and triple heavy blond beers.
Tripel is also a top-fermented beer with a strong malt mix. The typical taste is fruity (banana), dry, moderate bitterness and is dangerously drinkable.
